Carbon dioxide (CO 2) makes up the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions from the sector, but smaller amounts of methane (CH 4) and nitrous oxide (N 2O) are also emitted. The Electricity sector involves the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. Electric power sector emissions decreased 10% due to a slight decrease in electricity demand from the COVID-19 pandemic and a continued shift from coal to less carbon-intensive natural gas and renewables. The sharp decline in emissions was primarily from CO 2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion and was largely due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic-related reductions in travel and economic activity, including a 13% decrease in transportation emissions driven by less travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. greenhouse gas emissions decreased 11% compared to 2019 levels. ![]() This is where the PowerDock 5 comes into play, with its five bays and lower $99 price tag. 136 subscribers In this video Ahmed from the SB Supply Team introduces the new Griffin Multidock 3. ![]() Plus, the MultiDock is way too expensive for most households to be able to afford. While it’s quite possible, many families usually don’t have ten mobile devices that are being used. While the MultiDock can technically be used in a household for residential purposes, it’s mostly overkill for most families. MultiDock uses Griffins exclusive ChargeSensor technology to optimizecharging which automatically detects the charging characteristics of each connected. LED lights are on the outside to show charging and syncing status of the devices inside. Plus, the MultiDock can lock up by folding down the steel door and locking it with a key. The MultiDock will essentially be what laptop carts were in high school. Griffin is targeting the MultiDock at schools and businesses, especially during a time when more and more companies and educational institutes are taking advantage of iPads and other mobile devices. This means that when you plug in an iPad, the MultiDock will automatically use 2.1A, while plugging in an iPhone or other smaller device will force the MultiDock to use 1.0A. The MultiDock uses Griffin’s own ChargeSensor technology that allows the device to adapt on the fly with any iOS or Android device by automatically detecting and providing the fastest charging rate available for that device. It’s a bit expensive, but it also includes a wheeled cart that allows you to easily move them to a different location if need be. The MultiDock comes in two configurations you can buy a single 10-bay MultiDock for $699, or you can go all-out and get the three-unit setup that includes three 10-bay MultiDocks with a separate charging compartment for a laptop for $2,400. MacOS coming in fall - Like iOS and WatchOS, MacOS is usually offered as a free update to owners of compatible devices in September when Apple launches its new iPhones. The new common architecture between iOS and macOS should make porting an iPad app to macOS a whole lot easier. That means all Mac apps are going to need to be recompiled, but a slew of big names are already on board, including Microsoft and Adobe, and Apple's already ensured all of its native apps work with the new chips. The great recompile is coming - The other huge news out of Apple today was the announcement its moving Macs away from Intel processors to Apple's own silicon. Unlike on iOS, users of macOS can download any application from the open web without approval from Apple. ![]() ![]() Some developers may not want to offer their applications through the App Store on desktop, however, because of Apple's strict guidelines over software offered in that marketplace. This isn't a surprise - This merging has been expected as the company recently made universal purchases extend to macOS, so a customer who buys an iOS app can also download it on macOS for no extra charge and vice-versa. Some of the third-party apps that have used Mac Catalyst. Now that macOS looks a lot like iOS, the same user interface elements simply transfer over. Apple says that with Big Sur developers will be able to make their iOS and iPadOS apps available on the Mac without any modifications required whereas previously developers had to maintain separate codebases. A productivity application, for instance, makes much more sense being available on both desktop and mobile, and unifying the codebases could result in much lower costs for developers.Īpple already offers its Catalyst developer toolkit for porting iOS apps to macOS, though until today some system features and user interface elements were incompatible with macOS so developers still had to rewrite code. It could also demonstrate to developers how they can extend the functionality of their apps simply by porting them over, thereby offering them in more places and to more potential customers. ![]() Bringing the iPad version to the Mac will allow Mac users to finally access those features. NT non-transformed, -g calli transformed with pPZPSpCas12f vector without sgRNA. The numbers 1-10 and 11-20 indicate representative HMA-negative and -positive samples, respectively. We picked up 10 HMA-negative samples and 10 HMA-positive samples from Supplementary Figure S1. SpCas12f is thus a useful tool for genome editing in rice and is suitable for virus vector-mediated genome editing due to its very small size.Īnalysis of SpCas12f-induced mutations in rice calli (A) Heteroduplex mobility assay (HMA) to detect mutations on Tub-1 (upper panel) and Tub-2 (lower panel) in transformed calli. Taken together, we demonstrated that SpCas12f can be used to achieve targeted mutagenesis in rice. This might be due to the culture conditions, with relatively higher temperature (30☌ or higher) and constant light during callus proliferation. Surprisingly, however, mutations can be introduced without heat-shock treatment in rice. In the previous report in maize, mutations were introduced by treatment with heat shock at 45☌ for 4 h per day for 3 days no mutations were introduced under normal growth conditions at 28☌. It was confirmed that the mutations in the regenerated plants were inherited to the next-generation. Furthermore, mutant plants were regenerated successfully from the mutated calli. Moreover, off-target mutations by SpCas12f were not found. Most mutation patterns were deletions, but base substitutions and insertions were also confirmed at low frequency. Detailed analysis by amplicon sequencing revealed estimated mutation frequencies (a ratio of the number of mutated calli to that of SpCas12f-transformed calli) of 28.8% and 55.6% in two targets. Molecular analysis of SpCas12f-transformed calli showed that mutations were introduced successfully into the target region. An expression vector encoding rice codon-optimized SpCas12f and sgRNA for OsTubulin as a target was introduced into rice calli by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. In this study, we applied SpCas12f to genome editing in rice-one of the most important staple crops in the world. However, there are no reports of genome editing using SpCas12f in crops other than maize. Recently, targeted mutagenesis in human cells and maize using Cas12f derived from Syntrophomonas palmitatica (SpCas12f)-a very small Cas of 497 a.a, which is a more suitable size for virus vectors-was reported. Cas9 derived from Streptococcus pyogenes (SpCas9) is used widely in genome editing using the CRISPR-Cas system due to its high activity, but is a relatively large molecule (1,368 amino acid (a.a.) residues). ![]() ★ Alternatives: We've tried, and like, a bunch of other TP-Link products. This way, lights won't be going on and off during the day when no one can see them anyway. I like that you can choose a start and end time, instead of simply putting it into away mode until you turn it off. A few of our other picks have this setting too. If you plug lamps into them, you can make it look like someone's home and potentially thwart burglars. Away mode turns the plugs on and off randomly during the time you choose, without your having to actually set timers and schedules. The app is pretty simple to navigate, and there are scenes, timers, and schedules you can program to your liking. They perform the same as larger plugs, but in a compact body that is easily stacked with others-and if you use just one, it won't obstruct the second outlet at all. TP-Link makes great products, and I particularly love its Kasa line of mini smart plugs. Some plugs automatically restore the last setting once the power comes back. If your Wi-Fi or power goes out, you may have to reconnect your smart plug. You might experience connection issues. Most of these plugs also work with Google Assistant or Alexa, so once you set up the app and connect them to your preferred voice assistant, you may not need to use the app anymore. If you want to use many smart plugs in your home, you'll have an easier time if you buy them all from the same manufacturer. This is how you control it and find more granular settings, like the ability to set schedules and group several smart plugs into one category. You usually need to install an app to set up the smart plug. You can usually find dimensions on the company or retailer's website, so measure before you buy, and look at customer reviews. If you plug one into a socket, you might not be able to fit something else into your second socket. Devices that turn on with the flick of a switch, like lamps, TVs, and window fans, are more likely to work. ![]() For example, some coffee pots and window AC units need you to hit a “Brew” or “Cool” button for them to fulfill their intended function. What are you going to use it for? Not all devices automatically start when you turn the power on.Before you start shopping for a smart plug, you'll need to keep a few things in mind. ![]() ![]() This bulge in the top will raise the strings even higher, which will further accelerate the now well-established-and possibly fatal-distortion of the whole instrument.”Īs a preventive measure, if you’re storing a guitar in its case for a short period of time, like a few weeks or months, loosen all of its strings by anywhere between a half step and a whole step. Here the strings are pulling the bridge from a steeper angle, causing it to rotate and belly the top behind it. Richard Hoover, the founding luthier of Santa Cruz Guitars, explains, “As the action rises, the change in your instrument’s geometry decreases the guitar’s resistance to the string pull and in turn increases the forward movement of the neck. They might be protected from hazards like wayward antlers but are susceptible to the undesirable influence of string tension. (Figure about 12–15 pounds for each guitar and case.)ĭon’t be lulled into the false sense of confidence that your guitars in cases are impervious to damage. If you’d like to store your guitars horizontally, use a heavy-duty shelving unit, and, of course, make sure that the weight of the instruments in their cases does not exceed the maximum recommended weight of the shelves. A product like String Swing’s CC29 Folding Hardwood Guitar Case Rack (from $59.99) is an excellent solution for storing guitar cases upright, with or without instruments inside. Instead, store them vertically, side-by-side, positioned in such a way that they won’t be prone to topple over like dominoes. As obvious as this might seem, if you have multiple guitars, don’t stack them one on top of another in their cases. Generally speaking, the safest way to store a guitar is in its case-ideally, a good-quality hardshell, as opposed to a gig bag or ill-fitting chipboard case. One way to keep tabs on the humidity level inside your guitar’s case is with D’Addario’s Humiditrak, which has a Bluetooth sensor for connecting to a free smartphone app with push notifications. And with even just a little thought into how you store and display your guitars-whether short- or long-term, on a limited budget or with an expansive one-you can keep them in optimal shape, primed and ready to receive your ideas when inspiration strikes. Had these instruments been carefully tended to, they would have avoided those hideous injuries. ![]() Keith says, “The most egregious situations I’ve encountered have typically been people bringing me guitars without cases, walking through freezing rain with the instruments barely covered by garbage bags.” But that’s not the worst he’s seen in terms of damage. “I couldn’t help but say, ‘Well, in order to properly conduct the repair, we’ll have to know what animal previously owned the antlers,’” Sills says, laughing.Īround the same time, Martin Keith, a luthier and repair guru based in Woodstock, New York, fixed a Ribbecke guitar that had sprung apart at the lower bout, the result of having been in extended contact with a radiant floor heater. ![]() A pair of antlers had fallen off of a wall and onto his F Model, goring the back of the instrument. Several years ago, Carolyn Sills of the Santa Cruz Guitar Company got a phone call from a guitar owner in great distress. ![]() Installed programs on your computer can also bog your system down. Upgrading from 2 GB to 4 GB or 8 GB could substantially improve the performance of almost any computer, even one that’s several years old. The more RAM you have, the more processes you’ll be able to perform simultaneously. This allows your computer to perform multiple operations simultaneously, holding information in a kind of temporary memory. Much of your computer’s performance depends on its RAM, or random access memory. However, shutting your computer down completely allows it to clear temporary files and start fresh-so you should count on doing it at least once a week. This can be highly convenient since you won’t have to go through the entire startup process when you open your computer. Many consumers make the mistake of leaving their computer “on” and in a hibernating mode whenever they’re not using it, instead of shutting it down all the way. Shut down and/or restart your computer regularly.Ultimately, that results in a faster running PC. In some cases, you may add new features, programs, or installations that have the reverse effect, but in others, you’ll update your operating system to have fewer bugs and run more efficiently. Updating your computer will usually help it run faster. Try these tactics to make your PC run faster: ![]() At that point, it may be time to start shopping for deals on computers, so you can replace your unit entirely. If your computer is several years old and has been subject to heavy downloading and installation, even the best strategies may only marginally improve your performance. Note that while the following strategies can be used to make your PC run faster, they can only do so much. Some of these factors can be mitigated or prevented, while others are just a natural part of a computer’s lifecycle.įortunately, there are a few important changes you can make to encourage your PC to run faster. ![]() There are many reasons for this, including the excessive (and increasing) number of files bogging the system down, and bugs in your operating system. There are touch sensors on each earbud for media controls. The case itself takes about 2 hours to charge using the provided Micro-USB cable that plugs to the bottom of the case.Ĭompared to the 5-6 hour playtime of the AirPods, the Sound Mates earbuds definitely fall behind in that area. So if you are an office worker or someone looking to use these for extended periods of time, well, know that these will die shortly into your listening session.Ĭharging them is easy, just place them back in the case and wait for about 1 hour to get them back up to full charge. It’s unfortunate that the Sound Mates earbuds only last for 2.5 hours of playtime. You’re definitely very unlikely to run into pairing issues on a more premium pair of earbuds like the AirPods. Overall, the pairing experience is okay but can definitely be better. If that happens, you can try resetting the earbuds by placing them back into the charging case and waiting a few minutes to try the pairing exercise again. Now, there have been lots of reports from people that they run into pairing issues where the earbuds don’t pair to each other. You should hear audio coming out of the earbuds to indicate that pairing is complete. After that’s done, go to your smart device and navigate to the Bluetooth section and pair your device with “Tzumi Soundmates”. You should hear a couple of beeps when they pair together. Simply take the earbuds out of the case and wait until they pair to each other. Pairing these earbuds is fairly straightforward and takes about 15-30 seconds to complete. Which is actually the case on these earbuds, there definitely isn’t much stuttering or audio cut offs while using them normally. The Sound Mates do come with Bluetooth version 5.0, which means they should have a longer range and a more reliable connection. So my recommendation would be to expect to use the mic for quick calls or voice controls only. You will find that the mic does pick up background noise and will sometimes produce an echo. The microphone is good, but frequently inconsistent, especially if you are in a louder area. Tzumi did include a built-in microphone in the Sound Mates. So if you are using these for commuting or in public areas, then you’ll hear surrounding noise very often. The earbuds sit inside your ear but offer little to no ambient sound reduction. The sound quality definitely takes a hit as a result of their lack of noise isolation though. They have decent bass, a very clear sound profile and don’t lose that crispness at higher volumes. Now, they definitely won’t sound as good as the premium AirPods, but they certainly deliver decent sound quality. There isn’t much hollow-ness to how they sound and there isn’t any sound distortion at high volumes. When it comes to the Sound Mates earbuds, they actually sound decent for the price. If you have bought cheap or knock-off earbuds before, then you’re likely familiar with the “hollow” sound quality of some of the poor quality earbuds out there. ![]() There are a LED indicators in the case that let you know that they are charging as soon as you place them in the case. The earbuds fit into the cut outs within the case very nicely and stay in there via magnets. On the bottom of the case is the Micro-USB charging port where you can plug the case in for charging. ![]() Opening the case is easy and can be done with one hand. The case opens up from the top and is fairly secure and doesn’t open up if flipped upside down. The case looks very similar to the Apple case, however there is a distinct “stripe” like design on the Sound Mates. Tapping the earbuds on the backside results in different controls, that I detail below. On the backside of each earbud there are touch control sensors. The earbuds have a tiny metal ring around them, which is very obvious when looking at them, they are not “fully” white like the AirPods as a result. One thing to note is that the whole build of these earbuds is plastic and will feel a little cheap. One thing to keep in mind is that these don’t have eartips, so you can’t personalize their size and fit. They are a little thicker than the AirPods but will fit very securely inside your ear. The Sound Mates have a “barrel” shaped earbud that goes inside your ear canal, very much like the AirPods. ![]() ![]() However, it doesn't feel as sturdy, only has two side buttons, and lacks extra features like a scroll wheel with free-scrolling mode. Unlike the Razer mouse, which has a thumb rest on the left, this mouse has added ergonomic support on the right side and features a rest for your ring finger. If you're interested in a much lighter and less expensive alternative, check out the Cooler Master MM720. Unfortunately, this mouse is heavier, so it might not be ideal if you only play fast-paced, reaction-based games. Using the companion software, you can reprogram any of the buttons, make sensor adjustments, and customize the RGB lighting. As an added feature, its wheel has L/R tilt inputs and a free-scrolling mode that you can toggle to automatically enable when you scroll to a certain speed, like some of the more work-oriented picks on this list. Also, while many gaming mice have only two side buttons, this one has three. It has a right-handed shape with a thumb rest that provides more ergonomic support than typical gaming mice. The best ergonomic gaming mouse we've tested is the Razer Basilisk V3. That said, it's a versatile option that combines many helpful productivity features into an affordable package that's very comfortable for just about all hand sizes. Also, its mouse feet are on the thinner side and have sharp edges that can dig into softer mousepads a bit. Unfortunately, its shape and high palm rest make this mouse pretty bulky, so it isn't the most portable option. The scroll wheel also has left and right tilt inputs and unlocks for free scrolling. For power, it uses a single AA battery and has an impressive advertised battery life of up to 24 months. You can connect it wirelessly with its USB receiver or via Bluetooth, and it pairs with up to three devices simultaneously. It has a right-handed, ergonomic shape with a rubberized coating and a small thumb rest with a hidden button that enables gesture commands. It shares many of the same work-oriented features as our first pick in this list, the Logitech MX Master 3S, but it's significantly less expensive. ![]() In the budget category, we recommend the Logitech M720 Triathlon. However, it doesn't perform as well and lacks both Bluetooth support and multi-device pairing. Its size makes it a better fit for larger hands. If you're interested in a cheaper option, consider the Anker Wireless Vertical Mouse. This mouse connects wirelessly via Bluetooth or its USB receiver, and you can pair it with up to three devices simultaneously. There are three color options, making it easy to fit into your existing home setup. The button clicks are also very quiet, and the scroll wheel automatically switches between a notched scrolling mode and a much quicker free-scrolling mode. The build quality is excellent, and it has a textured rubberized surface that provides additional grip. There's also a left-handed version available. This pick is a bit smaller than many of the options on this list, making it a great choice if you have small or medium-sized hands. This design intends to reduce wrist strain by allowing you to rest your hand and wrist on your desk, avoiding pronation that can compress nerves in your forearm and wrist. The orientation of this mouse means you hold it in a natural 'handshake position'. However, its side buttons are a bit harder to reach, and it uses an older micro-USB charging cable as opposed to USB-C.Īt a mid-range price point, we recommend the Logitech Lift, the best vertical mouse we've tested. If these features don't interest you, we recommend checking out the older Logitech MX Master 2S, which is typically available at a lower price. This newest entry in the lineup features quieter click buttons and an improved sensor with a wider CPI range, which is especially useful if you use a 4k display. This mouse connects wirelessly with its USB receiver or via Bluetooth and pairs with up to three devices simultaneously. There's also a side-mounted scroll wheel within reach of your thumb that you can use to scroll horizontally, which is helpful if you deal with spreadsheets or timelines. You can press its large thumb rest section to enable gesture controls, and its primary scroll wheel unlocks automatically for faster free-scrolling, making scrolling quickly through a long document or website less strenuous. However, it's on the larger side and is most comfortable for medium-sized or larger hands. Its body is made of solid plastic with a soft-touch texture and feels very sturdily built. It's the latest entry in Logitech's MX Master lineup and shares the same sculpted, right-handed shape as other entries in the series. The best ergonomic mouse we've tested is the Logitech MX Master 3S. |
